Abstract

Drawing on personal experiences as well as academic references presented in the bibliography, this article examines how some Roma communities in Romania and other parts of Europe have undergone transformation since 1990, while others continue to adhere to traditional ways of life. While some Roma individuals and communities have long overcome the nomadic lifestyle and have integrated into their surrounding communities, notable transformations have occurred where Evangelical churches are present. This research aims to identify the role of the Church in the transformation of Roma communities across Europe and compare them to a number of Roma communities in Romania. Motivated by an observation of a growing trend in the emergence of Evangelical churches among Roma ethnic groups in the last three decades, the article analyses various changes and factors that have contributed to the transformation of lifestyle, social, and economic status within these communities. The study seeks to answer research questions regarding the factors that have contributed to the Roma community transformation, in particular the role of the Church. To this purpose, the article employs a historical and qualitative ethnographic research method.
