Abstract
For a decade and a half there has been an increased influence of “small religious communities”, Adventists, Pentecostals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Baptists, Methodists, Mormons and others, to the Serbian religious scene. Drawing from the spreading pattern in European as well as Balkan states, Protestant religious communities pay particular attention to ethnic minorities, especially Roma, whose confessional origin is Orthodox and Muslim. The conversion into Protestantism has given Roma a lot they were deprived of in Orthodoxy,Roman Catholicism and Islam: dignity and respect, care and welfare, hope and outlook. Pentecostalism, whose distinguishing trait is professing Evangelical messages in the force of the Holy Spirit, has eclipsed other movements in terms of religious engagement among Roma. Leskovac, which boasts an exclusively Roma Pentecostal Church (better known as “The Church under the Booth”, with a few hundred baptized believers), is considered to be the center of Evangelical Christianity. The paper is based on data collected through observation and participation in religious rituals as well as through the in-depth interviews, with members of the Roma Evangelic Pentecostal Church in southeastern Serbia and their pastors.
