Abstract
This study explores the historical origins and identity transformations of Romanian-speaking 'Gypsy' communities in Eastern Europe, tracing their roots from the Danubian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia to their current identities across various countries. Examining the categories of slaves and their roles during their historical migration, the paper highlights the complexities of ethnic identity as these communities opt for different identities that differ from the traditional Roma identity, often influenced by socio-political changes and migrations.
