Abstract

The article analyses the cultural dimension of the disaster and the role of the evangelical Christian religion among the Roma from the Asparuhovo district of Varna concerning the flood they experienced in June 2014. The flood, which causes casualties and property damage, affects the thinking, actions, and daily lives of all locals, including Roma who are evangelicals. It affects them in a specific way. They try to cope with the experience in two ways – they promise to become more committed to the faith than how they were before and go abroad in an attempt to escape (at least temporarily) from the scene of the tragedy. Going abroad, they try to earn money, renovate their house, and re-use the space in which they previously lived with their families. Ritualised practices such as prayer and participation in evangelical worship accompany the course of disaster and overcoming trauma. The article uses the results of fieldwork ethnographic research conducted in the Asparuhovo district in September 2020 and presents the case of Fatih, who survived the water disaster but lost some of his loved ones.
